The Keyword & Description Meta Tags

The Description is a narrative description of your Web page. There are many META tags available but I'm going to cover the two most important ones in this section.  They are the Keywords tag and the Description tag.  These two tags are greatly important because together, they provide a framework for search engines to know how to list your site.  And getting a proper listing is fundamental to getting more visitors

The Description Tag

The Description is a narrative description of your Web page.

Here's an example of what the Description Tag may look like:
<META name="description" content="Come to The Photo Advisor to find reviews, news, and prices on digital photo products, as well as free downloads and newsletters.">

In a previous section on the Title Tag, I gave you an example of how information on a results page from a Google search generally appears.  The example is shown below:

The first line of the information was from the Title tag.  The next two lines are from the Description Tag.  Google usually shows two lines of about 150 to 160 characters.  If you don't have a Description, then Google will pick up text from other places on your Web page to use for the Description.  It would be much better for you to spell out your Description, than to have Google pick out something for you.

Here's some things to consider when you write your Description:

  1. Keep the description plain and simple.
  2. Include a few keywords in the description.
  3. Avoid self-promotion or ridiculous statements.  Stick with the facts
  4. Include your sales pitch or attention getting words.
  5. Double check your spelling and grammar because the whole world will see it, you don't want your site Description to look like it was put together by an "Educationally Challenged Person".

The Old Keywords, They Ain't What They Used To Be

The keyword meta tag was originally designed to be a reference for indexing page content, and the early search engines greatly relied on it.  In the past, Web builders would simply create a list of keywords and place them in the keyword meta tag of a Web page and that's all they needed to do.

Eventually, Web builders began to abuse the system by stuffing the keyword meta tags with terms that had little or nothing to do with the content of their pages,  The purpose of doing this was to get high Page Ranking and traffic, simply by using all of the right common search terms.

The visitors got the "raw end of the deal" because they would end up getting a Web page that had nothing to do with what they were searching for simply because it contained the keywords that they were using.

The keyword meta tag was originally designed to be a reference for indexing page content. This improper use of the keyword meta tag eventually made them unreliable tools for indexing Web pages and ranking their relevance.  Consequently, now all the major search engines consider many other factors, in additions to the usage of keywords in their rankings.

The Keyword Tag

Here's how a typical keyword Meta Tag might look:

<Meta name="keywords" content="Electronics Shop,radios,batteries,electronics, television,calculator,
Tools,Toys,Transformer,Transistor,TV,VCR,Walkie Talkie,Weather,Wire,Wireless,digital cellular,cellular,analogue">

Notice that there are commas and no spaces between each keyword or keyword phrase, but there are spaces between the keywords within a phrase.
